The world seems to be getting busier, with greater demands on our time and expectations to produce more and do more. There is a madness of more and more striving.

Unfortunately, all the push and increased do-more-with-less mentality leaves you feeling less satisfied, causing increased anxiety and stress. Which makes free time even more valuable and good food for the soul.

Your best opportunity to re-charge your emotional batteries is to take advantage of those precious non-work hours known as your free time.

Try these 3 tips below on how to use your free time to your best advantage:

  1. Ask yourself, “What do you long to do?”

Make a list. Include simple and complex projects. Some activities require short segments of time, while others take longer. What makes your heart sing?

 2. Take a look at your calendar.

It’s good to get a visual of how much free time you have in a week. It can be exhilarating to realize you have 20 hours of free time each week. When does most of your free time happen?

On your calendar, highlight the time blocks when your free time will happen.  You will feel happy when you do this. It feels great to know you have some “me time” coming.

  1. Plan desired activities by writing them into your schedule.

Today we took a ferry into San Francisco, strolled around, and had lunch.
We do this a couple of times a month because we are “cruise crazy” and need our fix in between longer sea journeys. My husband teaches in the morning and I teach at night, so we have afternoons free together. We
take rides, go to the zoo, visit bookstores, and try different ethnic restaurants. We often play tourist in our own area – we even take the Hop=On-Hop-Off bus around the city. I have no problem relaxing when I leave the house. My office is in the house so at home I always feel like I should be doing something.

I love that you shared this. Most women need to do that more (make time to live out their desires).

Sounds like you take time out for yourself and to live your desires Linda. I am very happy for you. Congrats on your book coming out.

I am able to imagine this can be a lot cheaper than therapy or medication for many folks. Can we include pictures of our cats? How about recipes for vegan cupcakes? Interesting. The issue I have with UC is that I recieve the same message 12 times. I will get a message on facebook/linkedin or even an email and it will replicate over all of my devices….phone, ipad, laptop, PC. Alarms go off everytime someone texts me!!

Stumbled upon this book on amazon by chance. Glad I did. Read it in a day. I hope to hear from Nickel again. This was one of those books that you have to work at 7 am, and you finish it at 2:30am, and you are bummed that you have to sleep instead of reading.

      • Thank you melly for your response. I do have to note that you write using a lowercase ‘i’ instead of ‘I’. Is this not the same logic, if you don’t speak it any other way, why do you prefer to use the lowercase ‘i’?

Love this! I’m going to do step 1, write out a list of the things I long to do – I’ll bet there are more than I think there are, and it’ll be awesome to have that list to come back to next time I’m wondering what to do! 😉 Thanks, Tammy!

    • tammy says:

Great Jesse, I’m sure if you keep your list handy and note that some of the things might not even take a lot of time to do. Having the list close by means it is top of mind and quick action can be taken Hurray!

  4. Quality Piece thank you! You are so right about making sure you put it in the calendar, and sticking to your values. I realize that my family is so important to me but then I find myself overworking supposedly “for my family” but what I really long for is time with them so I have included more time with my fam! Thank you

    • tammy says:

Ah, thanks Jennifer for you comments. Your family is very blessed to have you. Yes, sometimes balancing between business, family and alone time can be a challenge when they all pull a person because you enjoy them all.
